Christmas Ham



This was the first year since Chris and I have been married that we celebrated Christmas by ourselves with just our kids. At first I was a little bummed that we wouldn't be able to be with my family since they were getting together in Florida, but I got use to the idea and was really looking forward to starting our own family traditions. We slept under the Christmas tree the night before Christmas Eve and also had a little birthday celebration for Jesus on Christmas morning, birthday coffee cake, candles and all! :)

Of course, since I love to cook, it was really important to me to have a great Christmas meal. So I planned the entire menu and decided to make a ham since that's been my families tradition since as far back as I can remember. I talked to Chris' grandma (who makes a killer ham) and asked her what kind of ham she uses. She told me to get a John Morrell bone in ham so I sent Chris to the store to buy the ham.

When Chris got home from the store I noticed that the bag containing the ham seemed rather large. Remember we only have four people to feed, myself, my husband, our 3 year old daughter and our 1 year old son who hates food....(yeah, he's not my child!). So as Chris is putting away the groceries he says, "you might want to make some room in the fridge for the ham, it's pretty big." So I'm thinking, OK, it's probably about 6 pounds, which is a pretty big hunk of meat. Then Chris says "it's a 20 pounder!" That's bigger then our one year old son!!! So I ask him how much it cost and he says "40 bucks...but Rachel per pound it was a better deal then the smaller hams." Just doing our part to stimulate the economy!



Apparently it was the smallest John Morrell bone in ham at the store and he figured he better get what I wanted. The ham did turn out awesome...and good thing too since we'll be eating it for the next six months! :)

Great ham story - Chris knows how to save money. Maybe you can freeze some. Do you put anything special on the ham before it goes in the oven? Great pictures too.
